More than just fruit cake

As a wedding enthusiast and a keen baker my favourite thing to check out at a wedding is the cake! The minute I am in the door of the reception I am over to the cake table taking photos from all angles and dying for midnight to come so that I can taste the flavours inside.

Gone are the days when cakes had to be all fruit and the top tier had to be saved for the christening of your unborn child. It was as if the child would be cursed if he/she didn’t have a cake that they couldn’t even eat.

Traditions are nice to keep to but not a must. Wedding cakes don’t have to be even cakes anymore with macaroons, profiteroles and even cheese taking over from the fruit. The majority of brides and grooms don’t even like fruit cake…I’m the only one of my friends who eats it!

If you are choosing to go for a cake no matter what shape or the number of tiers, make sure to express your personalities in the cake. With novelty cakes and cake toppers popularity growing ensure that your cake symbolises you as a couple and that’s it not something that could have been bought at last minute. Tie in your theme and colours into the cake.

While I love fun cakes I’m also a huge fan of simple classic cakes. Here are some of my favourite wedding cake options.

I love a fruit cake. Especially my mums. That’s why I asked her to make our wedding cake. Having it made by mum made it that little bit more special. I think the wedding cake should show a true reflection of the bride & groom. I’m always curious to see the wedding cake as no two cakes are ever the same. I haven’t come across a cake I didn’t like yet.
